Ear Surgery
Procedure
Otoplasty involves repositioning protruding ears and/or reducing the size of large ears. This procedure is often performed on children as young as five years old.
Duration
Approximately 2 hours.
Type of Anesthesia
Local anesthesia or sedation.
Need for Hospitalization
Hospitalization is not necessary. It is an outpatient procedure.
Possible Side Effects
- Temporary throbbing sensation (feeling of “pulsation”).
- Pain.
- Swelling.
- Redness.
- Numbness
Potential Risks
- Cartilage infection.
- Excessive scar formation.
- Blood clots that may need to be drained.
- Asymmetry or an overly artificial appearance of the ears.
- Recurrence of the original protrusion, which may require additional surgery.
Recovery Time
The patient can return to school or work within five to seven days and may resume more strenuous activities (such as contact sports) in one to two months.
A special compression garment (ear band) is required for 4 weeks.

Generally permanent.
